Home / Artists / JEHOON OH

Idea of drawing yarns came to Jaehoon Oh suddenly and unexpectedly. While going through somewhat of a creative slump recently, Oh saw a friend stitching yarns to make a winter gift for another friend. A hand stitched gift using yarn… Oh decided that she wanted to create artworks that are as warm as these yarns. Her other artwork series, Dear J, started during her artist residency in Long Island City, US. She came across a flooring sample made of plastic but that looks like wood. There are so many things around us that are just like this; packaged to look like real but are not real. We become so used to seeing them that we are numb. Maybe it is the instinctive self-defense coming into play. The message the artwork carry is somewhat heavy, but the expression is witty, sincerity of the artist can be felt, with the artist jumping around the artworks like a little girl. Soon after graduating from graduate school, Oh was invited consecutively by different galleries for solo exhibitions, and by large cultural funds and museums for group exhibitions, sealing her reputation as recognized upcoming artist in Korea. In 2013, Oh worked In ARPNY under its artist residency program for a year, followed by her 4th solo exhibition with BCS gallery New York, paving the way for another solo exhibition back in Korea.
