KOO JA HYUN

KOO JA HYUN

Koo has focused not only on the spiritual themes, but explored various medium such as lithography, screen print, woodcut, painting, and terracotta, and finally achieved his style.

Koo has a much more innovative and enquiring mind compared to those artists who settle in continuous use of one art material and technique, in that he has experimented various medium, techniques, and ideas. It may be resulted from his attitude where he hardly satisfies with what he has accomplished.

In particular, the medium Koo made his most important contribution was printmaking, for which disciplined self-management through calligraphic practice and giving more stress on portraying the spirit; both characteristics have been continued throughout his artwork.

And that’s where the difference between Koo’s limited edition printmaking and reproduction print edition of original painting, and more creativenesses is laid on Koo’s work. That’s why I would feel for Koo printmaking process would be needed the same energy as monks and nuns are devoted their lives to religious practice, for it makes sure of his belief system in art and is to develop personal ethical discipline.

Like the austerity of monks’ life, Koo’s limited edition printmaking is produced. He doesn’t permit any smallest errors; he is so delicate and careful that precise technical realization of printmaking would be possible; it often involves internal efforts to self-regulate the mind in some way.
