KIM BYUNG JOO
Byung Joo Kim’s works started from his visual curiosity about the boundaries of space. His famous relief works, Ambiguous Wall, breaks down buildings by eliminating ‘surfaces’ and leaving only lines and dots. Resulting spaces, which has been made unclear of what’s ‘inside’ and what’s ‘outside’ by these ‘ambiguous walls’, now clash and overlap each other opening up a new space more subjective to new interpretations and possibilities. Ambiguous Wall induces the audiences to activate a high level of spatial perception awareness. It is a visualization of invisible space, a multilayered and multidimensional structure of endless intersections of horizontal and vertical lines which gradually come closer and eventually overlap each other by perspective system. The work is created of delicate steel, with finely carved exterior catching the eye first, while giving way to the complicated interior such as staircases that connects each floor inside the building. When light Is shoned on the work, shadows from different parts of the building gets all tangled up, again creating a whole new space behind it. Kim is one of the most remarkable and active young sculpture artist in Korea today, participating in multiple solo and group exhibitions as well as overseas art fair in 2013 alone.
