HA HYOUNG SUN
Windows are where the inside meets the outside. Looking out of the window opens you to what is on the outside as well as making you aware where you are on the inside. What is out there is not always what you see from within. Sometimes you only see what you want to see. Sometimes you see only what the window allows you to see. Windows are timeless. A scene from a window embraces the past, present and future. The experience of contemplating and meditating through the window is like a passage through a projection of memories and dreams. Knowing where I am and where I am going both physically and mentally is important to me. In the Window Series, I have documented the views of windows from places where I have been. In the darkroom, I throw grains of rice onto the light sensitive paper. By doing this, I create a photogram while the negative is exposed creating my image of the window. Korean clairvoyants throw rice to foresee the future. I throw the rice onto the photographic paper with similar intent. All of us are trying to predict what will happen in an unpredictable world. The act of throwing and tracing the rice transforms the image outside the window to a place where you pause to understand the past, be aware of the present and foresee the future. It is an attempt to be aware of being in the flow of time and space. In the process of creating my art, I begin to understand where I exist in that flow of time and space and hopefully, the viewer can understand where they exist as well.
