YOUNGWOOK CHOI

CHOI YOUNG WOOK

Moon pottery. It is big, about 40cm in height. Because of its size it needs to be created separately in two parts and put together. Because of this, it is round but often asymmetrical.
Perhaps, it is this unintentional irregular shape that gives it a natural look, and it is considered the most Korean of all potteries. Such beauty of a moon pottery was given a market approval when one single white moon pottery was sold for 230 thousand dollars at New York Christies in 1987. Choi choice moon pottery as a subject matter to tell his stories. He told and sought his and other common life stories through this moon pottery. In his series of works, Karma, the web-like lines that run all over the pottery bears the meaning of the work. These patterns, typical of a Korean pottery, is not just to depict the pottery in reality. These are the paths of our lives. They split but quickly rejoin back, like the encounters and the partings in our lives. They look similar but actually different, but then, different but form a harmony as a whole. It symbolizes the life joys and sorrows that often is beyond our control, and the force that seem to control them.
