JEHOON OH

ABOUT ARTIST OH JE HOON Idea of drawing yarns came to Jaehoon Oh suddenly and unexpectedly. While going through somewhat of a creative slump recently, Oh saw a friend stitching yarns to make a winter gift for another friend. A hand stitched gift using yarn… Oh decided that she wanted to create artworks that are as warm as these yarns. Her other artwork series, Dear J, started during her artist residency in Long Island City, US. She came across a flooring sample made of plastic but that looks like wood. There are so many things around us that are just like this; packaged to look like real but are not real. We become so used to seeing them that we are numb. Maybe it is...

YONG R. KWON

ABOUT ARTIST YONG R. KWON As I meet the darkness… Try being alone in pitch-black darkness and truly experience the darkness. On one hand, the darkness swallows everything around it until it seems there is nothing. On the other hand, objects will undoubtedly appear in the darkness. The beginning of all was darkness. As a door is opened inside the darkness, which once revealed no hint of consciousness, an excruciating yet warming ray of light pierces the door opening. Consciousness awakens within the dark of a coma-like state. The awakening is as short and concise as a shriek. My artwork holds light. It reflects light in ways that embody and make apparent the nature and existence of light itself. Light is scattered in a powerful...

JIN-SEONG YIM

ABOUT ARTIST YIM JIN-SEONG Yim Jin-seong paints based on the tradition of Korea’s Real Scenery Landscape but he is not confined by the dogma of the tradition. Rather, he achieves a contemporized style by having diverse experiments, and therefore, extends the boundary of Korean traditional painting. The series of Yim’s painting <MongYu Geumgangsan(夢遊金剛山圖)> in the style of Golden Powder Landscape Painting (金粉山水畵) shows what the artist experienced from Mt. Geumgang where it is believed to be a utopia by Koreans since old times. After decades of the division of the country, when the first tourist business was started by private enterprise, the artist had an opportunity to visit a remote village located on Mt. Geumgang. He witnessed that the opening of Mt. Geumgang tourism ironically...

SEUNGHYO JANG

ABOUT ARTIST JANG SEUNG HYO The work of Jang Seung Hyo is a photographic collage, created from thousands of photography works he has collected over the years. The artist seeks to make his work easily enjoyable by the mass in everyday life, rather than seeking art to be enjoyed within a white cube space for particular people. The artist’s experience in New York City’s Time Square greatly influenced his subsequent work. Within a layer of buildings and billboards depicting unrealistic images as well as countless tourists amongst a forest of buildings, the artist is processing something that can be experienced only through his senses beyond the limitations of rational judgment. The artist regarded them as something raw and began to make his archives with a...

JONGSOOK KIM

ABOUT ARTIST KIM JONG SOOK The artist, Kim Jong Sook follows the Korean tradition of depicting pristine ink brush landscape paintings. She manages to contemporize a age-old tradition, by embellishing the scene with shimmering crystals in her “Artificial Landscapes” series. The works depict mesmerising panoramic landscapes – soaring cliffs and sudden valleys, neatly sheltering trees and flora within their sharp crevices. The studded Swarovski crystals in all their resplendent glory pepper the canvas. The crystals catch the light and sparkle profusely, making the landscape appear fantastical – a sparkling dreamscape. The artiist transfers the image onto the silkscreen and converts it using various different materials and techniques. She incorporates powdered crystalline pigments, transparent silicone, and Crystal Moonlight and Sapphire Satin crystals. Every crystal in the painting...
